Sometimes you can’t easily thrift exactly what you want. This is when a little DIY spirit can go a long way! I found a huge men’s t-shirt at goodwill with some dried up paint on the sleeves. I loved the graphic which promotes Dayton’s public transit system, which I’m a frequent user of, but I didn’t love the paint. I turned to my good shears and my sewing machine and transformed this giant t-shirt int
o a fitted little crop top!
Along that same vein, I’ve been seeing oversized barrettes all over Instagram and Youtube, but I didn’t want to purchase ones that were made under unethical conditions. I found some more sustainable options on Etsy, but they were pretty pricey. So, I decided to make some myself! I grabbed a cardboard box from my recycling and some yarn and barrette bases I already had. After some hot gluing, I had some fun barrettes that I liked even more than the ones on social media! I like how mine are fun and different from the standard tortoiseshell or pearl versions.
I hope these two little anecdotes inspire you to get a little creative! If you’re willing to bring out your crafty side, you can save some money and be sustainable. Plus whenever you get a compliment, you can say “thanks! I made it!”
